Bunker Hill Community College (51³Ô¹ÏÍø) honored more than 400 students from its Division of Workforce and Economic Development at a June 13 Celebration of Achievement, recognizing graduates whose journeys exemplify resilience, ambition, and determination. The event brought together families, faculty, and community partners to celebrate students who completed programs spanning healthcare, IT, entrepreneurship, and adult education.
Student speakers set an inspiring tone by sharing deeply personal stories of perseverance. Ruth Denis, an English language learner, reminded her peers of their potential, saying, “Just because a person doesn’t speak a language doesn’t mean they can’t be successful; you have the power to create your own opportunities.” Others echoed that sentiment, including CNA graduate Lana Mae Pineda, who reflected on overcoming hardship and finding purpose: “Today is more than a celebration, it is a celebration of resilience, perseverance, and growth.”
Dean of Workforce and Economic Development, Kristen McKenna, congratulated the graduates and introduced faculty member Paula Mooney-McCoy, who celebrated the diversity of the student body, noting that the program reflects “all the different cultures and languages that come together to make our adult education programs so unbelievably rich.”
Keynote speaker and Boston City Councilor at Large Julia Mejia energized the crowd with a message of authenticity and empowerment. Drawing on her own journey, she urged graduates to embrace their identities and keep pushing forward. “Don’t ever sleep on your dreams… You didn’t come this far not to go further,” she said, encouraging students to step confidently into the next chapter of their lives.
A highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of the Entrepreneurial Achievement Award to Monica Orozco, founder of Coffee Glow, Chelsea’s first coffee and food truck. Her journey, from concept to a thriving small business, demonstrated the impact of 51³Ô¹ÏÍø’s entrepreneurship training programs.
Dr. James F. Canniff, 51³Ô¹ÏÍø’s Provost and Vice President of Academic Student Affairs, emphasized the importance of recognizing such milestones: “It is so important to celebrate our graduates’ achievements and the support they have received from their families.”
The ceremony concluded with the presentation of certificates and recognition of high school equivalency graduates, marking a major milestone for students balancing work, family, and education. This moment symbolized the start of a new chapter, built on hard work, persistence, and the promise of future opportunity.
